Federal Grant to Help Atlantic City Workers

Atlantic City has received a $29 million federal grant to help city workers laid off after four casino closings in the city. The grant provides money for worker retraining.

Atlantic City has received a million in worker retraining aid from the federal government to help more than 8,000 workers displaced by casino closings in the resort last year.

The U.S. Labor Department announced the National Emergency Grant and is making $13 million available right away, with the rest to be released as the state demonstrates continued need for retraining money.

The Atlantic Club, Showboat, Revel and Trump Plaza shut down in 2014, leaving 8,000 workers without jobs.

“The Atlantic City economy was dealt a staggering blow with the closure of these casinos,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez. “For the thousands of workers who lost their jobs as a result, we are committed to providing the resources, support and training they need to get back on their feet.”

Awarded to the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development, the grant will be operated by the Atlantic Cape May Workforce Investment Board and the Cumberland Salem Workforce Investment Board, which will provide the reemployment services to the affected workers.
