First Retail Sportsbook Opens in Colorado

Saratoga Casino Black Hawk June 17 became the first casino in Colorado to accept a retail sportsbook wager. The wager was a $100 bet on the Denver Broncos to win the Super Bowl next year.

The sportsbook is operated by Betfred USA Sports and the occasion was the reopening of the Black Hawk casino after three months of shutdown due to the coronavirus.

Coincidentally Betfred USA signed a multi-year sponsorship with the Broncos. Part of the agreement allows Betfred to operate a sportsbook lounge outside Empower Field at Mile High, where the Broncos play.

The Broncos made a similar deal with the FanDuel Group, becoming the first NFL team to partner with a sportsbook operator since the NFL changed its policy to allow such arrangements.

Last month the Colorado Division of Gaming reported that the state had a sports handle of $25.5 million. The main activity in betting was on Capital One’s The Match: Champions for Charity with Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, NASCAR and UFC since no professional sports teams are active yet.
