Flandreau Santee Sioux Compact Approved

The Bureau of Indian Affairs approved the Flandreau Santee Sioux tribe's new Class III gaming compact, allowing up to 1,000 slots at its recently renovated Royal River Casino and Hotel (l.) near Flandreau, South Dakota. The tribe will pay Moody County $75,000 when 500 slots are operating, increasing to $350,000 for 1,000.

The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe’s new Class III gaming compact recently was approved by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. As a result, the tribe will be allowed to operate up to 1,000 slots at its Royal River Casino and Hotel near Flandreau, South Dakota. Under the compact, the tribe will pay Moody County ,000 a year when 500 slots are in operation; that will increase to 0,000 at 700 slots, 0,000 for 850 slots and 0,000 when all 1,000 machines are in operation.

Two months ago the tribe secured a $3.6 million loan to renovate and expand the Royal River Casino and Hotel.

Acting Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Larry Roberts stated, “The compact increases the authorized number of gaming machines to 1,000 and establishes tribal contributions to local governments based on the number of gaming machines in operation. In addition, the term of the compact is subject to review at 10-year intervals starting from the date of approval of this compact with an automatic 10-year renewal.”
