The Florida Lottery recently announced a second consecutive week of record sales, with scratch-off ticket sales of 3.23 million and overall sales of 1.28 million. As a result, the state’s Educational Enhancement Trust received more than million from scratch-off sales alone for both weeks.
The record-breaking sales occurred despite Circuit Judge Karen Gievers’ recent ruling that the Florida Lottery lacked the legal authority to approve a $700 million-plus contract with IGT Global Solutions to operate lottery games through 2031. State Rep. Richard Corcoran had sued the lottery secretary last month contending the contract exceeds the agency’s authorized budget.
The contract raises the number of automated ticket machines that sell scratch-off and Powerball-type games from 2,000 to 5,500. It also allows new smartphone applications that let players check their tickets and enter second chance sweepstakes.
The Florida Lottery previously had a contract with GTECH for $387 million.
Governor Rick Scott, who disagreed with the judge’s opinion, said, “The Florida Lottery continues to make record contributions to our public schools and today’s ruling jeopardizes billions of dollars for Florida students.” Scott said he will appeal.
