Gerald Aubin, who ran the Rhode Island Lottery as director for nearly a quarter of a century, had second thoughts about representing IGT after he retired.
Although as of August 25 he was listed as a lobbyist for the company, he later told Target 12 news that he had decided against working for the company he once regulated.
Aubin retired in July 2020. In August of this year he formed a new company, GSA LLC, and was listed as a lobbyist for IGT. In 2020, while still heading the Lottery, he negotiated a 20-year, $1 billion contract with the company. The contract was the subject of much controversy.
He told Target 12 in an email, “I began pursuing the IGT offer but in the end chose not to.” He added, “To be clear, there are specific rules and regulations that govern my involvement in the private sector as a former state employee. And, I would have complied with all of them. Nevertheless, as a former gaming regulator and law enforcement official, I couldn’t get comfortable with it.” He added, “Even though it would have been perfectly legitimate for me to enter into an agreement with IGT or any other company, I will not nor have I received any compensation from IGT or expect to in the future.
IGT Chairman of Global Solutions Co. Bob Vincent confirmed Aubin’s story to Target 12. He added, “The industry has tremendous respect for him, both his integrity and experience. His value to an organization is unparalleled.”
Aubin has decided not to be a lobbyist at all, he says.
