A former leader of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and his wife face federal charges for submitting false travel invoices, bank fraud and money laundering.

Kevin Edwards, former vice chief of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, and his wife, Sheena A. Edwards, were both named in a news release released last week by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The period covered by the indictment is between March 2015 and June 2017, when Edwards served as vice chief and unsuccessfully ran for chief in 2015. He is charged with one count of theft or embezzlement from a tribal organization, two counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to launder money, two counts of money laundering and three counts of false statements to a bank.

His wife is charged with one count of conspiracy to money launder, two counts of money laundering and one count of false statements to a bank.
