Joseph Paolino, former mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, has confirmed that he is part of a consortium of investors interested in buying the Newport Grand slots parlor from longtime owner Diane Hurley.
The group has said that it would only proceed with the sale if given permission to install table games at the casino. That, in turn, would require that the state’s voters approve of the games in a referendum, which would have to be referred by the legislature.
Given that neighboring Massachusetts is in the process of adding three casino resorts and a slots parlor, Paolino told the Providence Journal, “I don’t think this facility can be successful without table games.”
