Former Swedish Gaming Monopoly Prospering

Svenska Spel, the former Swedish gaming monopoly that was set free to compete in a competitive market, is doing very well. Its revenues are up 2 percent over the same quarter of last year. This occurred in spite of new responsible gaming measures that were imposed on the industry.

Sweden’s former gaming monopoly Svenska Spel has reported that revenues are up despite no longer being the only game in town.

In the first quarter of this year Svenska Spel announced a 2 percent increase in its revenue to SEK1.98 billion (£160 million/€180 million/$190 million) up from SEK1.94 billion in the same quarter of last year, according to CDC Gaming Reports.

This happened despite new responsible gaming measures being imposed on the sector, and despite smaller slots revenues at the company’s land-based casinos. Despite those challenges, the company’s retail and brick-and-mortar casinos were able to operate at full capacity, an improvement over the previous year when opening times were shorter due to the effects of the pandemic.

Svenska Spel president and CEO Patrik Hofbauer declared, “Even in an uncertain time, we continue to create long-term value for customers, owners and employees, as well as for Swedish sports and society in general.”

He added, “We do this by our surplus going to the treasury and by our support for Swedish sports. But also by offering sustainable and fun gaming experiences.

“During the quarter, we have distributed 52 thousand in winnings in number games and lotteries with a total value of more than SEK291m.”
