Foxwoods Chairman Butler Honored as Citizen of the Year

The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut last week honored Rodney Butler as its Citizen of the Year. Butler is chairman of the Pequot Tribal Council and interim CEO of Foxwoods Resort Casino.

The award was presented by Chamber President and CEO Tony Sheridan, who talked about Butler’s work as chairman of the board of United Way of Southeastern Connecticut. He has committed his time and energy when he didn’t have to,” he said. “He has reached out beyond himself in his role to help others.”

Butler has led the tribal council since 2010 and became interim CEO of Foxwoods last June after the sudden death of CEO Felix Rappaport.

Sheridan also praised Foxwoods Resort Casino for contributing over $4 billion to the state’s economy since it opened in the 1980s. It also spent more than $100 million in the state with vendors and businesses. It also employs about 6,500.

In answer to the encomiums honoring him, Butler replied, “It’s just doing the right thing, with the right people, and rowing in the same direction.” He added, “I’m really proud of the tribal nation, their efforts helped get me here. Hopefully being recognized will encourage others to become engaged.”
