France’s online gambling sector had a strong recovery in the third quarter with $17.1 percent growth over 2019 and significant growth over the second quarter when the closing of major sports leagues due to the coronavirus was in effect.

Revenue for the quarter rose $482.2 million, representing a 25.4 percent improvement on the second quarter.

Gambling regulator L’Autorité Nationale Des Jeux described the increase as a “spectacular recovery,” as it was accompanied by a 29.3 percent increase in active player accounts, to 2.7 million

Sports betting saw wagers rise 49.3 percent to €1.62 billion. Betting on soccer brought in €1.03bn, in a period where most major leagues played out the conclusion of the 2019-20 season following Covid-19 suspensions.

Sports betting gross gaming revenue was of €228m, a 6.5 percent improvement on the same period in 2019.

Online poker also performed well as player numbers grew to 880,000, from which operators generated revenue of €90m, a 36.4 percent rise, comprising €24 million from cash games and €66m from tournaments.

Horse racing also enjoyed a strong third quarter after racing resumed in May. Customers staked €363m during the quarter, which resulted in revenue of €87 million, a 31.8 percent year-on-year improvement.
