France Sets Sports Betting Record

Sports betting revenue increased 22 percent for the second quarter of 2017 compared to last year according to French gambling regulator ARJEL. Turnover hit a new all-time high of €636 million. French sports betting revenue rose by 22 percent in the second quarter of 2017 over 2016 and overall turnover hit a record €636 million, according to a report by French gambling regulator ARJEL.

The regulator also reported a 5 percent increase in women placing wagers for the quarter while the number of male bettors dropped by 4 percent.

The country’s online horserace betting market’s turnover rose by 9 percent to €239 million compared to last year. Racing revenue also rose 5 percent to €58 million. Online poker revenue also saw a needed bump of 5 percent to €58.6 million versus Q2 of 2016.

In the Spanish market, regulators reported a 22.6 percent revenue boost for the quarter compared to 2016.

Total revenue for the quarter was at €121.3 million, slightly down from the first quarter of this year. Sports betting in the country was also down 15 percent from the first quarter, but still up over 2016 by 12 percent at €60.1 million.

Casino revenue, however, was up 52.5 percent compared to Q2 figures from 2016 fueled by an 84 percent increase in slots revenue.
