France to Restrict Bonuses to “Excessive” Gamblers

France’s gaming regulator l’Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ) has announced a ban on offering bonuses to “excessive” players. It also proposes limiting welcoming bonuses to €100.

Besides these restrictions the regulator issues several binding guidelines and recommendations to operators. It admonished operators to “ensure that no commercial offer includes financial reward to people identified as potentially having excessive or pathological gambling” and to be especially careful about consumers who have used self-exclusion or a gambling loan.

It prohibits bonuses that use misleading language or aren’t transparent and to make clear all the conditions attached to them. It told operators “Write the complete rules of the financial reward offer in a legible and understandable manner and make them available on an easily accessible medium.”

The non-binding recommendations included limiting bonuses to €100 and for existing customers not to tie bonuses to “levels of intensity” of playing.
