French Senate Approves Shared Partnerships for Online Poker

The French Senate has approved amendments proposed by ARJEL, the country gambling regulators, including one that would allow partnership agreements with other jurisdictions to share online poker player pools. The partnerships could be with jurisdictions within the European Union and the European Economic Area.

France’s Senate has approved three proposed amendments to the country’s online gambling legislation proposed by ARJEL, France’s gambling regulator.

One of the amendments allows ARJEL to be allowed to sign partnership agreements with jurisdictions within the European Union and the European Economic Area to establish shared poker player pools.

The other amendments speak to the availability of data and the mediation of gambling-related disputes.

Under the partnership amendment, the regulator would have the authority to allow an operator that holds a gaming license to allow French players to take part in games with players on sites approved and licensed by an EU member state or jurisdictions within the EEA. The games would have to be authorized by ARJEL, such as Texas Hold ‘em and Omaha.

Following the French Senate’s vote, the bill’s text will now have to be aligned with amendments approved by the country’s Lower House and other French officials. The amendments could become law by the end of 2016.
