North Las Vegas’ Lucky Club Casino near Interstate 15 and Cheyenne Avenue will be renovated and rebranded as Ojos Locos Sports Cantina y Casino at Hotel Jefe, which will be the first Latino-centric casino in the country, according to parent company Fifth Street Gaming (FSG).

A groundbreaking ceremony for the new project was held Tuesday, September 20.

FSG CEO Seth Schorr told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the local Latino population “is one that is deserving of an experience that is designed specifically for them in every way. The language is the most obvious but food, entertainment, all of our programs are completely programmed for the Latino community.”

According to Schorr, the property’s hotel will remain open while the casino and restaurant are closed for renovations. No re-opening date has been set, but the company expects to complete construction in January of next year.

The new location will feature 10,000 square feet of gaming space, an equal-sized entertainment area as well as an Ojos Locos Sports Cantina with a capacity of 300, which will be the largest to date for the Dallas-based sports bar chain.

Ojos Locos currently operates 18 restaurants throughout the southwestern U.S. Its bars often feature Spanish-language sports broadcasts, music and food.

When the partnership was first announced in April, Laura Caudillo, Ojos Locos’ vice president of marketing, said in a statement that the company is “excited and honored to collaborate with Fifth Street Gaming on this project, allowing us to bring the Ojos experience to Nevada. We look forward to adding to the Latino community experience with our excellent service, delicious food and fun atmosphere.”
