Gambia President Lifts Gaming Ban

Gambian President Adam Barrow (l.) has issued an executive order to reopen the West African country’s gaming market. Since 2015 Gambia has been under a ban on the industry imposed by former President Yahya Jammeh.

New prez hopes to liberalize industry

Gambian President Adam Barrow, inaugurated in January, has issued an executive order to reopen the country’s gaming market including lotteries, sports betting and casinos.

According to SBC News, Barrow who was elected last year and took office in January, wants to turn Gambia into the “leading West Africa business/commerce hub, liberalizing the country’s services and trade.”

Ex-President Yahya Jammeh imposed the ban in 2015, saying gambling was a corrupting influence on the people of the West African country, and an “unethical and exploitative” business. Jammeh ordered local police and military to crack down on criminal gangs offering betting services and civilians who participated in gambling activities.
