Gambling in Sweden Rises

A new study on Swedish gambling activity by consultancy firm Mediavision found that 55 percent of all Swedes aged between 18-74 gambled monthly during the second half of 2017. That is a five percent increase over the same period in 20116.

The study found that gambling at internationally licensed operators drove the growth with one in eight Swedes saying they gambled monthly at foreign online gambling websites, an increase of 25 percent over 2016.

Malta-based operators Kindred Group, LeoVegas, and Betsson, were among the biggest drivers of growth in the local gambling market. The study found a majority of new accounts by Swedish gamblers were opened at foreign sites.

Sweden is set to introduce a new gambling law next year with rules that would allow foreign operators to apply for licenses for the provision of online casino and sports betting services to Swedish customers. The move is expected to create one of Europe’s largest regulated markets.
