Gaming Expanding Across New York

Tioga Downs (l.) has added more than 450 machine games to its newly expanded gaming floor as New York continues to bulk up as a leading casino state. The expansion comes as Seneca Buffalo prepares to roll out $40 million in new gaming and non-gaming attractions and a new VLT venue opens its doors on Long Island.

New York’s Tioga Downs Casino & Racing has opened its newly expanded gaming floor, raising the Southern Tier venue’s machine gaming complement from 461 to 944.

Nine new table games were also added, bringing the total to 32.

Since opening its full-scale casino in December—the first of four new Las Vegas-style commercial casinos authorized by the state in 2013—Tioga Downs has grossed well over $13 million in gaming revenue.

“Harness Racing season is only a few months away, and we’ll soon be announcing our 2017 Summer Concert Series,” said President and General Manager Scott Freeman said. “We’re excited for a big year ahead of us, and are hiring for a multitude of people, including positions at the track and casino positions, including table game dealers, food and beverage, and beyond.

The expansion comes in the wake of continued expansion in New York’s casino offerings statewide.

Up in Buffalo, the Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino announced that a $40 million expansion of the tribally owned resort will soon be unveiled.

Plans call for more than 10 new table games and the addition of a high-limit room, plus more than 360 new slots, a new non-smoking area, a performance stage for live entertainment, additional retail outlets and restaurants and new meetings and events space.

At the other end of the state, in Long Island, the new Jake’s 58 Hotel and Casino opened at the Suffolk OTB in the town of Islandia on February 27 with 265 video lottery terminals.

The financially struggling OTB is hoping for a boost from the expansion and Jake’s rebranding. Plans call for the addition of 34 more VLTs this month and a total of 1,000 by the summer.
