Gaming Money Behind First U.S. Atlantis Property

The company founded by the man that many call South Africa’s Donald Trump: Kerzner International Holdings plans to open an Atlantis resort in Hawaii. The Atlantis Ko Olina on O’ahu will be the firm’s first U.S. venture.

The company that South African hotel and casino mogul Sol Kerzner founded—and sold in 2014—will open an Atlantis resort in Hawaii, the Atlantis Ko Olina on the island of O’ahu. Of course there will be no casino there since Hawaii is one of two states where no gaming is legal.

Kerzner International Holdings, now based in Dubai, recently penned a deal with China Oceanwide and its subsidiary Oceanwide Resort Paradise HI to develop the property. The resort will have 800 hotel rooms and 524 residences and will include a water park and aquarium.

The company is owned by Investment Corporation of Dubai (46 percent), Goldman Sachs Group, Colony Capital and Istithmar World, a subsidiary of Dubai World, which has 25 percent. The resort, to be located on 26 acres of vacant oceanfront property adjacent to Disney’s Aulani hotel, will be the company’s first project in the United States.
