Gaming Provides Half of $557 Million Cherokee Budget

Nearly half of the recently announced $557 million budget of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina comes from its gaming enterprise. The money supports tribal housing and health care services, plus direct per capita payments to tribal members.

In North Carolina, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Chief Michell Hicks announced a 7 million budget, with nearly half coming from the tribe’s gaming enterprise. “We continue to have a strong financial position,” Hicks said.

The money goes to tribal programs and services, including health care and housing, as well as direct per capita payments to tribal members.

The tribe operates the Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort. This fall, it will open the Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino and Hotel this fall, which will provide 3,400 new jobs.
