Genting Cruise to Nowhere Sails From HK

More than 1,000 travelers set off from Hong Kong on July 31 aboard the city’s first-ever “cruise to nowhere” on the Genting Dream.

Commerce Minister Edward Yau Tang-wah expressed the hope that the cruise was a step towards “bringing back normality,” even as Covid cases continued to surge in parts of Asia.

According to the South China Morning Post, bookings for other “seacation” packages will continue through December. Last month, the company announced that it had completed the vaccination of its officers and crew. The ship’s captain said he “can’t wait to welcome guests back onboard” after nearly 18 months without sailing.

Guests over the age of 16 were required to have taken two doses of vaccine at least 14 days before their sailing date.

The Hong Kong cruise comes after another of Genting’s ships, the World Dream, was forced to return from a cruise to nowhere out of Singapore after one of its passengers tested positive for Covid.
