Genting Makes Three for Greek Airport RFP?

Just when it seemed just two contenders would vie for a license to operate gaming at a onetime international airport (l.) near Athens, Malaysian-based Genting may be getting back in the game. The two confirmed contenders are both U.S.-based tribal operators: Hard Rock and Mohegan.

Genting Makes Three for Greek Airport RFP?

Two confirmed contenders who want to operate gaming at a onetime international airport near Athens may soon be joined by a third. According to published reports, Malaysian-based Genting could challenge U.S.-based Hard Rock International and Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment for the license.

The massive €8 billion (US$8.84 billion) development at the abandoned Hellenikon International Airport is considered a linchpin for economic growth by the New Democracy government, which succeeded the former ruling Radical Left Syriza and its anti-foreign business elements.

The Hellenic Gaming Commission is behind the drive to develop and integrated resort at onetime airport, which is “now overrun with weeds, abandoned buildings and rusting aircraft,” according to the Greek National Herald. For 18 years, lawmakers have planned, then delayed plans, to transform the site. An IR and “urban park” at the location is expected to include convention facilities and a casino with at least 500 slot machines besides a minimum of 100 table games.

The closest casino to Athens is the Regency Casino Mont Parnes in Acharnes, 25 miles away. Genting did not confirm reports of its renewed interest, reported Casino.org.
