Genting UK, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Genting Malaysia Bhd, has announced the permanent closure of Genting Casino Southport in the northwest of England. The closure leaves 38 staff members “at risk of redundancy,” the firm said in a statement.
According to G3 Newswire, Genting said the closure resulted from the loss of business caused by Covid-19. The U.K. unit has already closed casinos in Margate, Torquay and Bristol and reduced staff in London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Blackpool and Birmingham.
“As we all know, the coronavirus pandemic has created unprecedented challenges right across the leisure industry,” a Genting UK spokesperson said, “and whilst we have worked tirelessly over the past 10 months to sustain the business as best as possible, permanent club closures have, unfortunately, been simply unavoidable.”
To date, Genting UK has closed three of its casinos as a direct result of the pandemic and is now proposing that Southport becomes the fourth.
“We know what difficult news this will be for all of our hard-working colleagues in Southport and will do everything we can to support them at this challenging time,” the company said.
