Genting Casinos UK has submitted the largest bid by far, €140 million, in the competition for a license to develop an integrated resort with a casino in the Iberian principality of Andorra.
Genting Grand Casino Andorra, as it’s called, a joint venture between the Genting Group subsidiary and Andorran and British business interests, plans to target a high-end international clientele with attractions that include a “gastronomic market” for local restaurateurs, a health spa specializing in anti-aging therapies, luxury residences and high-roller suites and a casino with two floors of private salons for elite gamblers.
The proposal promises 1,000 jobs—600 in construction, 400 when the resort is open—and would be the largest private investment in the history of the Catalan-speaking state, which lies in the eastern Pyrenees between France and Spain.
“The traditional casino as it was known until now is obsolete, hence the commitment to an integrated resort to complement all the services that the country can give to tourists,” Stephanie Steinbrecht-Aleix, a spokeswoman for the project, said.
Eight other international groups have put forward bids for the license, including Spanish gaming giant Cirsa and leading French operators Partouche and Barriere, though none to date has bid more than €18 million.
