Georgia Lawmakers Consider Legalizing Casinos

Two meetings will be hosted in September by the Georgia Senate Preservation of the HOPE Scholarship Program Study Committee to review legalizing casino and horse racing gambling. MGM Resorts International recently has been looking at Atlanta properties for a potential $1 billion casino destination.

The Georgia Senate Preservation of the HOPE Scholarship Program Study Committee announced it will host two meetings to consider legalizing casino and horse race gambling, plus the related social and economic issues. The meetings will be held 1-4:30p.m., Monday, September 14, and 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 15, both in Room 606 of the Coverdell Legislative Office Building at the state Capitol complex in Atlanta. The committee will present a report on the issue by December 1.

Recently representatives from MGM Resorts International have been reviewing Atlanta properties for a potential $1 billion gambling destination resort.

Gambling expansion in Georgia would be help raise revenue for education, from early childhood pre-kindergarten programs to the HOPE college scholarship program that has helped provide college educations for thousands of Georgians.
