German Online Gambling Licenses Delayed

A German administrative court has ordered a delay in the issuing of online gambling site licenses in Germany while complaints about the country’s new gambling laws are investigated.

Confusion over Germany’s Interstate Treaty on Gambling 2012 has led to more delays for online gambling sites seeking a license in the country.

Licenses were already delayed after the European Union sought clarification of the law. Now, complaints from online operators caused the Administrative Court of Wiesbaden to order the halting of licenses while the complaints are investigated.

The ISTG allows private online providers to accept sports bets online, but leaves in place a state monopoly for games of chance and a general ban on online gaming.

Germany has issued 20 online gaming operators provisional licenses, but full licensing has now been delayed.

According to reports, unsuccessful companies such as Tipico, BetVictor, bet365 and Sportingbet are amongst those issuing legal challenges, as well as Betlic, even though their bet-at-home.com brand was one of the 20 applicants to receive the temporary license.
