Germany Declares DFS is Illegal Gambling

The German gaming regulator Gemeinsamen Glücksspielbehörde der Länder (GGL) has classified some forms of daily fantasy sports (DFS) as illegal gambling, iGaming Business reported May 2.

The regulator reviewed several forms of DFS. It referenced Germany’s Fourth State Treaty on Gambling, which only allows gambling that is approved by GGL.

A member of the GGL board, Ronald Benter, said the decision was made to protect players from addiction and illegal gambling.

GGL CEO Benjamin Schwanke commented, “Fighting illegal gambling is an important consumer protection issue and can only be effective if all other authorities involved, such as law enforcement agencies, pull together.”
