Die Glücksspielbehörde, the German regulator, is increasing pressure on internet providers to block the lottery wagering site Lottoland. The regulator previously persuaded some payment providers to no longer serve Lottoland, in an effort to shut it down in Germany.
The regulator took over enforcement against unlicensed online gaming sites in July. It focused its initial attention on Lottoland because Germany’s Fourth State Treating on Gambling does not allow lottery wagers. It argues that Lottoland is doubly pernicious because players might confuse it for a legitimate lottery.
Die Glücksspielbehörde is threatening to fine ISPs “substantial” penalties if they don’t block Lottoland.
As reported by iGB, a member of the regulator board, Ronald Benter, said, “Raising awareness among internet service providers is extremely important. Providers who fail to prevent access to unauthorized offers despite the GGL’s order face the threat of severe penalty payments.”
Other penalties for operators could include being prosecuted for not paying taxes.
