Germany to Issue 9 Online Gaming Licenses

Germany’s gaming regulator, the Sachsen-Anhalt State Administration Office, has approved nine new online slot and poker licenses.

The new licensees join three other operators who were previously approved. They are the online slots operators Tipwin, Mybet and Mernov. No online poker licenses have been issued thus far.

A total of 71 operators have submitted applications to the Office since the games became legal on July 1, 2021. Since then, eight have been withdrawn, three are being considered and one has been rejected. Many more must still be reviewed.

In addition, 25 illegal online operators have been referred to law enforcement to be prosecuted for breaking German law.

Thomas Pleye, president of Sachsen-Anhalt State Administration Office said in a statement, “The main focus remains on issuing licenses for online poker and virtual slot machines. We have issued the first permits here.”

The approval of the state gambling treaty coincided with the creation of the Glücksspielbehörde (GGL), charged with regulating gaming. It will take control January 1, 2023.
