Germany to Sports Betting Applicants: Get Offline

Operators applying for sports-betting licenses in Germany must stop all illegal online activities. So says the Regional Council of Darmstadt, which will begin the official licensing process in 2020.

Gaming operators who want to be licensed in the German market must stand down from all illegal operations, such as online casinos, according to the Regional Council of Darmstadt in Hesse, which will process the applications starting next year.

The council has ordered all licensees to agree to refrain from unregulated forms of gaming, either directly or through affiliated businesses on receipt of a sports betting license, reported CDC Gaming Reports.

They must also provide comprehensive financial information and evidence of licenses in other jurisdictions.

Only sports betting is currently permitted in the German federal market, so operators who are online elsewhere would have to close these services before they could launch in Germany.
