It’s been more than 25 years since gambling was legalized in Deadwood, South Dakota. The former mining town used gambling to help it once again become a tourist destination and today boasts almost 30 casinos. But they ranges in size from a couple of slot machines to full blown casinos. Larry Eliason, executive secretary of the South Dakota Commission on Gaming, has been the chief regulator for two decades and explains the almost homey way the casinos are controlled in South Dakota. Joining the discussion is Craig Sparrow, a Deadwood native and a member of the commission. GGB Publisher Roger Gros spoke with Eliason and Sparrow at the offices of the commission in Deadwood in September.
