Plan to reject second Gold Coast casino defeated
Two gaming licenses are available in Queensland, Australia and international operators are taking a closer look at the market.
According to the Asia Gaming Brief, state department official David Edwards said there has been interest from several U.S.-based companies and told a gaming conference that NagaCorp is considering placing a bid.
“That would indicate that people are bullish of the tourism story and the long term growth prospects in Australia,” said Edwards.
Treasurer Curtis Pitt told the Cairns Post there has been “renewed interest by other parties” in Cairns since the Fung family’s Aquis Corp. shelved its casino plans at Yorkeys Knob.
“I’ve indicated that in my view there is a very strong interest in Cairns and again a very strong opportunity for something to happen in Far North Queensland,” said Pitt. He said the Gold Coast is a preferred location; recently a bid to stop a proposed second Gold Coast casino at Southport Spit went down to defeat.
