Goa Casinos May Not Reopen

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant of the Indian state of Goa indicated last week that casino operations in the area may remain closed. Goa has six offshore casinos and onshore operations based at five-star hotels. All have been shut down for the last three months.

Earlier this month, India’s only listed gaming company, Delta Corp. said it was not yet possible to estimate the potential losses due to the temporary closure, reported the Times of India. The company owns three offshore casinos in Goa with some 1,800 gaming positions. Offshore casinos have been a bone of contention for locals for years; lawmakers have repeatedly pledged to relocate them, but failed to honor those promises.

Due to Covid-19, a state-wide curfew is in effect until at least August 16.
