Goa OKs Sixth Offshore Casino License

Even as politicians in the Indian state of Goa assert their opposition to the local casino industry, the industry continues to grow. A sixth offshore casino will soon enter the Mandovi River thanks to a conditional license.

Decision made two days before election

The state government of Goa, India has given a conditional renewal to the license of an offshore casino belonging to Golden Globe Hotels Private Ltd., reports the Times of India.

A subsidiary of former Haryana Minister Gopal Kanda’s MDLR Group, Golden Globe had filed a petition for the renewal. On March 8, the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court gave the state government 24 hours to renew or reject the application. Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar approved the launch of Goa’s sixth casino.

Depending on election results, the ship may not sail for long. The ruling BJP party has said it opposes casino boats but could not ban them until the people determined which party would lead the government. Its rivals in the election, the Congress and Aam Aadmi parties, both have pledged to ban all the state’s casinos, land-based and offshore, if they win the election.

All six of Goa’s floating casinos are supposes to relocate off the Mandovi River by March 31.
