ASF plan was canned
Casino opponents staged a rally at a Queensland park to protest the possible use of public-owned Gold Coast land as a casino resort.
It’s not the first casino that’s been planned for the area; the land now in question borders property owned by developer ASF Consortium, which planned its own casino resort at the Southport Spit before the government turned thumbs-down on the project.
According to the Gold Coast Bulletin, Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate came up with the latest plan, and in August wrote to the state government asking that the land—now occupied by Carey Park, the Southport Bowls Club and Southport Tennis Club—be considered for an integrated resort and casino.
Some 300 protestors were joined by lawmakers including Councillors Dawn Crichlow, William Owen-Jones, Glenn Tozer and Daphne McDonald. Southport MP Rob Molhoek also attended.
Former Councillor Eddy Sarroff, whose home borders the property being eyed off for the development, used the rally to demand the project be canned. “We are all concerned and we want the premier to hear our message that public land is not for sale,” he said. “Stop this nonsense.”
