Grand Lisboa Palace Plans for 150 Tables

Most of Macau’s newer casino resorts have room for hundreds of gaming tables, but have been awarded just 150 by the government. SJM Holdings hopes regulators will apply the “same standard” to its new Grand Lisboa Palace (l.) in Cotai.

Grand Lisboa Palace Plans for 150 Tables

Project to open in 2019

When it comes to new-to-market gaming tables at his Grand Lisboa Palace in Macau, Ambrose So Shu Fai is keeping his expectations in check.

The CEO of SJM Holdings Ltd. hopes the new resort, to open in the Cotai district in 2019, will get 150 new-to-market live dealer tables.

“Our casino can accommodate 400 gaming tables, but of course the government would not grant us 400 gaming tables,” due to a 3 percent annual cap on growth of tables in the market through 2022, said So. “Usually, in the cases of the other Cotai casino resorts, the grant is around 150 new gaming tables.” He said he hoped the “same standard” would apply to the new SJM property.

According to GGRAsia, Sands China Ltd. got 150 tables for its Parisian Macao, but not all at once: it opened in September 2016 with 100 tables; added 25 more in January and will get the final 25 in 2018. Sands China had previously stated the Parisian had capacity for up to 450 gaming tables.

Wynn Macau Ltd got 150 new tables for Wynn Palace: 100 at its August 2016 launch and 50 more in increments. It had said it had capacity for 500 tables.

Analysts told the news outlet that it’s more important to optimize the per-table yield than add hundreds of new tables. SJM Holdings has the largest portfolio of licensed gaming venues among the city’s six operators.

“SJM can allocate its tables from the other properties. If we see there is a market need, we’ll allocate some from our properties to” Grand Lisboa Palace, said So.
