Greece Submits Sports Betting Details to EU Commission

The Greek Ministry of Finance has sent draft legislation on sports betting and online games to the European Commission for review. The ministry is looking to take greater control of the country’s gaming industry.

The Greek Ministry of Finance, seeking to exercise greater control over gaming in the country, has compiled draft legislation on sports betting and online games and submitted it for review to the European Commission.

According to the legislation, mobile sports betting licenses will have a seven-year term and come with a fee of €3 million (US$3.3 million). Online games will also be licensed for seven years and cost €2 million (US$2.2 million).

SBC News reports that random number generator (RNG) games will have a maximum stake of €2, with the maximum profit per session limited to €5,000. The maximum payout for jackpot games will be €500,000.

The draft legislation also limits advertising of RNG games, allowing the ads only on the sites where the games are played. The promotional restrictions will not be applicable to other forms of iGaming, such as sports betting, poker and other casino products. Only people aged 21 and over can play.
