Greek Casinos Down in First Half

The Greek casino industry marked a decline in visitation and turnover in the first half of 2018. It’s part of a decade-long trend, according to sources who spoke to local media.

Three markets of nine were up

Greek casinos saw a drop in visitation and revenues in the first half of the year, continuing a slow decline that began 10 years ago.

Sources tell eKathimerini that the country’s nine casinos received 1.3 million visitors from January through June, down 2.3 percent from the same period in 2017. Only three markets—in Thessaloniki, Parnitha in Athens and Corfu—saw an increase in patronage.

There was also a reported decline in turnover, with total bets amounting to €740 million (US$865.4 million), a drop of 1.8 percent from the first six months of 2017. During the same period last year, bets totaled €754.2 million (US$882 million).

Gross gaming revenues came in at €116.2 million euros, down from 120 million in the first half of 2017, down 3.2 percent. For full-year 2017, GGR declined 3.8 percent.
