Grosvenor Plans Southampton Bid

Grosvenor, the UK’s largest casino operator, wants to get larger. The company says it plans to challenge Aspers for the license to a new casino in the English city of Southampton.

Britain’s largest casino operator plans to bid for the license to operate a new casino approved for Southampton.

Grosvenor says it is interested enough in a £450 million plan to redevelop the city’s Royal Pier to launch a bidding war with Aspers for the right to operate up to 30 table games and 150 limited-prize slot machines there. The site also will include a hotel, restaurants and bars, an outdoor park and a marina and could create 7,000 new jobs.

Grosvenor owns 55 casinos in the UK, while Aspers currently operates the only two 150-slot casinos in the country: one in London and one in Milton Keynes.

Bidding is slated to begin April 1 and will be reviewed for the municipal council by the fall, at which time it’s expected a winner will be announced.
