Group Promotes Proposed Louisiana Casino

In Monroe, Louisiana, the South Side Economic Development District is working to bring in a riverboat casino on the Ouachita River. The state legislature would have to declare the river as a gambling waterway, and the state gaming director would have to issue a license. A parish-wide vote also would be required.

The South Side Economic Development District in Monroe, Louisiana is investigating the possibility of hosting a riverboat casino on the Ouachita River. Executive Director Charles Theus said, “I think the casino is something that enhances the district,” offering additional entertainment and creating hundreds of jobs. He added, “The casino pays good money. We’re talking $15 to $18 an hour, and people on the floor and higher-ups make even more money.” Theus said a casino would keep money in the parish instead of losing it to casinos in Vicksburg and Shreveport.

The legislature would be required to designate the Ouachita River as a gambling waterway. Next, the state’s gaming director would have to issue a license to Monroe. Finally, a parish-wide vote of approval would be required.

Theus is working to accomplish these steps by November, during the legislature’s regular session.
