Guyana Officials Deny Sleepin Casino License

Sleepin International Hotel and Casino Inc. (l.) has been denied a gambling license by the Guyana Gaming Authority. The officials said owner Clifton Bacchus did not provide the documents required to prove the company's "financial soundness and capability. Bacchus said he'll resubmit the application with the proper documentation.

The Guyana Gaming Authority announced it rejected an application for a casino license by Sleepin International Hotel and Casino Inc., owned by Clifton Bacchus. Officials said Sleepin provided no documents as required to establish its “financial soundness and capability.”

In a statement, the Guyana Gaming Authority said “that having received and thoroughly considered the application it unanimously found no evidence upon which it could arrive at a determination that Sleepin International Hotel & Casino Inc. qualifies for the issuance of the licenses applied for, having regard to its failure to provide the Authority with documents evidencing its financial soundness and capability, one of the critical criteria for the granting of such licenses.”

The statement continued, “The Authority has cited this deficiency as a grave defect in the applications, which necessitates a refusal of the applications for a Casino Operator’s License and a Casino Premises License, since the speak clearly and specifically to ‘the financial soundness and financial capability of the applicant.'”

The statement concluded, “The Sleepin International Hotel & Casino Inc. has been notified accordingly.”

Bacchus quickly responded he intends to submit a new application with all of the information that is needed. His new 150-room Church Street Hotel and Casino is nearly completed. Bacchus said when the property opens it will employ more than 300 people.
