The resignation of Hakan Hallstedt as director general of Lotteriinspektionen, Sweden’s national gambling regulator has created uncertainty in the Swedish online gaming market.
Lotteriinspektionen confirmed that Hallstedt would not be returning to the regulator and has accepted a job as a judge for the Blekinge District, which he will take up in May.
Hallstedt had been responsible for reforming Sweden’s national gambling laws, including creating a legislative framework for online gambling. Hallstedt formed a special committee to study the country’s rules in 2015 after criticism from the EU over the country’s lack of gambling regulations.
Hallstedt had promised recommendation by the country’s next general election in 2018, but few details of what is under consideration have been released.
