Hard Rock Japan last week announced the appointment of casino consultant Akira Kurita as the unit’s chief public affairs officer. The appointment signals Hard Rock’s determination to remain in the integrated resort race, though its preferred location, Hokkaido, has officially bowed out of the race; according to Asia Gaming Brief, his appointment suggests that the U.S.-based firm will try to persuade Hokkaido to rejoin the competition.
“Kurita has been engaged in IR activities in Hokkaido for more than 10 years, and has a good knowledge of various businesses and Japanese affairs,” said Hard Rock Japan President Ado Machida. “In addition, he has been working on the issue of MICE facilities… These are essential elements for the further development of the Japanese team.”
Kurita, formerly of Japanese public relations firm Hakuhodo since 1983, is a leader of the firm’s engagement with the developing IR industry. He has become one of Japan’s leading lecturers on IR matters, counseling lawmakers and businesspeople alike, AGB reported. Hard Rock Japan has focused its IR campaign on building a facility at Tomakomai, Hokkaido.
Last November, Hokkaido Governor Naomichi Suzuki announced that the prefecture would not proceed with an IR bid. Clearly Hard Rock hopes that decision is not final.
