Holland Casino Soon To Be History

The government of the Netherlands is breaking up its casino monopoly and opening the market to competition. Lotteries and online gambling also will be put out for bid.

The Dutch government is dismantling and selling off its state-run casino monopoly Holland Casino.

Junior Justice Minister Fred Teeven said 10 of the company’s 14 properties will be sold off under their current name while the other four locations will be sold individually.

The cabinet is also planning to open up the market to new entrants after 2017 and will offer two new licenses.

Ministers have also reached agreement on deregulating internet gambling, which currently is restricted to the government’s Staatsloterij monopoly. Competition will be permitted beginning next year for operators who qualify for licensing and meet standards on responsible gaming. The tax on revenue will be set at 20 percent, plus 0.5 percent to a gambling prevention fund and 1.5 percent for regulatory costs.

Lottery licenses also will be available for operators willing to dedicate 40 percent of profits to good causes.
