Due to rising waters on the Ohio River, the hotel, spa and cafe at Horseshoe Southern Indiana in Elizabeth temporarily were closed as a safety precaution on February 20. The casino, shops and pavilion, however, will remain open. The facilities will remain closed until the river is no longer near or at flood stage. It’s the first time the facility has shut down since 2015, also due to Ohio River flooding.
As water began flooding the parking garage and parking lot, Horseshoe Marketing and Entertainment Manager Lizzet Verdi said hotel guests were notified by email about the closure and were directed to other area hotels. “We regularly monitor the river levels and work closely with the Army Corps of Engineers to determine any closures. The decision to close the hotel becomes a factor when the water level reaches 55.5 feet, so anytime there is forecast to crest over that amount, we take precautions for our guests and team member safety. We will continue to monitor the levels and make the decision to open accordingly,” Verdi said.
River levels were expected to rise past the flood stage of 55 feet to 58.2 feet by Friday, National Weather Service meteorologists said. The rising river plus moderate-to-heavy rain into the weekend could cause flooding in low-lying areas. The forecast called for 3 to 6 inches of rain through Sunday morning. The rain was expected to start on Wednesday, break on Thursday, and return later in the week.
Verdi said customers may consult the casino’s Twitter and Facebook pages or call 866-605-9088 for updates.
