House Committee Chairman Irks Colleagues Over Indian Affairs

The committee chairman who oversees Indian affairs is setting a lot of teeth on edge with his apparent anti-tribal statements. Rep. Rob Bishop (l.) has been open in his goals to clip tribal sovereignty and is doing his best to stop pro-tribal legislation.

The chairman of the House committee that is responsible for tribal matters is irking some of his colleagues with his apparent intent to kill pro-tribal legislation and his stated goal of curbing Indian sovereignty.

U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop, chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, is allegedly ignoring Indians while at the same time trying to chip away at sovereignty and federal trust and treaty obligations.

Indian Country Today quoted an unnamed House staffer: “There are slights being felt. The congressman’s decisions are causing some heartburn.”

The committee includes the Subcommittee on Indian, Insular and Alaska Native Affairs, chaired by U.S. Rep. Doug LaMalfa.
