HSBC Malta has blocked all credit card transactions for online gambling and advised Maltco, Malta’s lottery organization, to choose another bank.
Bank officials said they were acting on legal advice, and has concerns about illegal gambling sites, but did not provide further specifics. The bank says it stopped the transactions last year, but gamblers reported being able to make transactions through the bank until recently, according to published reports.
Bank officials said they did not feel an announcement that the bank would not serve illegal gambling sites was necessary.
