iGaming Platform Knocked Out by Cyber-Attack

SBTech, provider of platforms for online sportsbooks and casinos, was shut down last week after a likely ransomware attack. While customer data was not breached, the system shutdown affected operations of clients including the Golden Nugget and the Oregon Lottery.

Two online casinos in Atlantic City were among the casualties of a cyber-security threat against their platform provider, SBTech.

The company informed its clients of the incident late on March 27. The attack affected the Golden Nugget and Resorts in AC, as well as the Oregon Lottery and BetAmerica, according to Legal Sports Report.

More than 50 sportsbooks reliant on the provider were taken offline March 20 and 21 when the company monitoring system detected the possible attack. SBTech shut its global data centers as a protective measure, and law enforcement agencies are looking into the attack.

On March 30, SBTech confirmed no customer data had been breached. But customers of operators have complained about a lack of access to their funds in the wake of the shutdown. To get back up at full power, SBTech will need clearance from regulators in the U.S. The company has a presence in six states.

The attempted cyber-attack came weeks before DraftKings’ acquisition of SBTech is expected to close.
