The ilani Casino, owned by the Cowlitz Tribe of Washington state and operated by the Mohegan tribe, has banned indoor smoking as a Covid-19 safety measure.
The ban will remain in effect until further notice.
A statement from the tribe said the action was prompted by “increased rate of infection” in the area. Cowlitz Tribe Chairman William Iyall said in a statement: “It’s the right time, and it’s the right thing to do for our team members, our guests, the Cowlitz Tribe and our entire community.” He added, “The health of our members, and indeed that of everyone who is a guest of our homeland, is our first concern.”
Guests may smoke outdoors in designated covered areas, including an area that offers beverage service and lawn games.
The casino confirmed two cases of Covid-19 among its staff since it reopened and has been the target of a health safety complaint to the state’s Occupational Health and Safety Administration by an employee.
