Illinois Approves Budget, Resumes Games

With a new budget in place for the first time in two years, Illinois resumed offering Powerball and Mega Millions lottery games. The state briefly was unable to pay jackpots over $25,000. The House of Representatives overrode Governor Bruce Rauner's veto to approve a tax increase and spending plan.

Powerball and Mega Millions games once again are available in Illinois. Lottery officials had announced in June that payments of jackpots worth more than ,000 would be delayed as of July 1 until a budget was in place. However, the House of Representatives overrode Governor Bruce Rauner’s veto of a state income tax increase and a spending plan. As a result, effective July 1, the state now has a budget for the first time since 2015.

Illinois Lottery Acting Director Greg Smith said, “The Illinois Lottery is pleased to announce that sales of Mega Millions have resumed, and players may purchase tickets at any of the Lottery’s nearly 8,000 retail partners, via our mobile app or at IllinoisLottery.com.”
