George Wickliffe, principal chief of the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, could be removed from office over allegations of mishandling tribal finances. Recently filed impeachment charges stated Wickliffe violated the 14,300-member tribe’s constitution by restricting tribal Treasurer Ella Mae Worley and her predecessor from having full access to the tribe’s financial records and shuttered Keetoowah Cherokee Casino.
In addition, Wickliffe is accused of mishandling more than $1 million in tribal contracts and funds. He’s also charged with a third count of violating the tribe’s corporate charter by failing to provide for citizens’ general welfare.
A hearing is scheduled for May 24. For Wickliffe to be impeached, at least two-thirds of the council must vote in approval.
